Set in an era when superheroes were loved and adored by the public, most of the mainstream heroes of this time were caught up in the glamour and fame fueled by their profession. They endorsed commercial products, sold action figures, wrote books, and starred in Christmas television specials. They were more like celebrities than heroes and suffered from the same downfalls, namely drugs, alcohol, and partying.
The Retributors consider themselves above the nonsense because they don't give into commercial hype and they persevere out of the limelight, dedicated to their mission. The rest of the superhero community looks upon them as a paradox: brawling lowlives, but also erudite snobs.
